Offensive Line Notes
Laschout.com has learned that there looks to be a few shifts along the offensive line in preparation for this Saturday's game against Iowa.
Firstly, it does not look like John Shaw will be ready go for the Hawkeyes.
Secondly, look for a depth chart "flip flop" at the offensive guard positions. Sources indicate that Rich Ohrnberger will switch from the left guard spot to right guard and that Mike Lucian will start now at the left guard position.
In addition to Lucian, both Lou Eliades and Stefen Wisniewski have been seeing work in practice at the left guard spots. Wisniewski has returned to practice this week after battling a moderate shoulder issue over the past few weeks.
It remains to be seen whether the PSU staff will choose to play Wisniewski over the course of the rest of the season or seek a medical redshirt.

is there a reason for this?

I think the simplest way to explain it is that the coaches are trying to put together what they consider to be the best OL to go against the Iowa team. Trying to match up the strength of our OL against the strength of Iowa DL. To give us the best chance to win the battle in the trenches.
On a side note. I am hoping that they use the medical red shirt on Wiz. He is a true player that could start for the next four years. I would rather see a 100 perccent wiz next year then a 70 percent wiz this year.

You're right. I hate a 70% wiz. You have to go just a few minutes later. Kidding.
I think with the state of things (no BCS, no Big Ten championship) we should RS Wiz. Let him have 4 full healthy years.
Funny story about playing to the other teams strength, as the article mentions. In HS, we were going to play a team with really good DT's, but not so good DE's. Our strength was our OT's. We practiced all week with our OT's at OG and vice versa. We get the ball first in the game and line up - the opposing team moved their DT's to DE. After one play we switched back to our normal set. Almost pulled off a nice upset, if me and my best friend hadn't gotten burned on a deep pass on a 4th and 6 from the far side of midfield with less than 2 minutes to go. Still haunts me to this day, as you can probably tell.

The line has not been bad, it's the quarterback coach they need to replace.

Whatever happened to big Lou Eliades? Someone please tell me other changes are afoot on offense; like the quick hook on the qb.

Lou's ability is not the problem. The concussion he had earlier in the year was more serious than first thought so they have been very careful with him.

I'm glad the staff is willing to make changes along the o-line, even if they are minimal.
It seems like applying for a medical redshirt might be a risk with Wiz. He can't apply until he's a senior correct? And without definitive proof that it was a serious injury that kept him out his entire freshman year, who says the NCAA will grant him that 5th year.
It seems like a lot of teams could abuse the system if they get medical redshirts for true freshman who are only banged up for a few games but can still play later in the season.

The medical redshirt issue is a non-issue here. He is able to play, and is therefore ineligible for a medical redshirt.

It's so nice to see offensive line changes, when your quarterback has thrown five interceptions in the red zone and fumbled three times this year.
What a great idea.

When Shaw is healthy, he's not a good player on the OL, no matter where they put him. I'm sure glad that injury is keeping him from the field, because certainly no depth chart competition would be able to do that.
I look forward to the day where there are open competitions for positions on this offense. The defense can do it, why not the offense (I know, JOE dictates the depth chart)

Don't asume the defense has open competition either. Rubin seeing time at safety, and Perretta at CB over other players, is a pretty good indication of that.

How bout replacing the 300 pound turnstile---Cadogan--he sucks!!!

May be true, but PSU's terrible to atrocious OT recruiting has left them with nothing better behind Cadogen.
He's not been great, but not bad either.
