Job Well Done Fran...Not!
According to this, we have a tremendous future out of conference opponent. Wait for it. Eastern Illinois. Who else has just circled their calendars for October 10, 2009? Coastal Carolina must not have wanted to make another trip to Happy Valley.
Well done Fran.

Par for the course. Like with wins and losses maybe we should just lower our expectations in regards to our out of conference schedule??? Pretty soon North Penn or Thomas Jefferson will be on our schedule. I guess Paterno put in the order that he needs to get victories with these patsies to somehow catch Bobby because wins are so few and far between during Big 10 play. Penn State is the General Motors of College Football. I have come to except that fact.

don't all big 10 and sec programs schedule cupcakes like this? i believe psu has series against Nebraska, Alabama. Nobody knew how bad Syracuse would be when they were scheduled. Same for ND. Didn't some other teams bail out as well?

at least jay will get an easier schedule in his first year as HC

Buffalo, Fla International, Coastal Carolina, Temple and now this. Hey since the old man went to Brown let's make a swing thru the Ivy League. Let's schedule Brown, Princeton, Harvard and Yale too.

I don't know why everyone is getting upset. Schedule anyone better and we're looking at a sure loss.

Ever hear of a guy named Tony Romo?
Didn't think so.

Ever hear of Andre Reed? Does that mean we should start schedualing all the psac schools in PA.

I have heard of Tony Romo. I've also heard of Jerry Rice. That doesn't mean I want to see us play Mississippi Valley State.
That said, I think people are being a bit harsh on our OOC scheduling. We do nothing different than other B10/11 schools in that we schedule 2-3 tune-up games and 1 marquee matchup. Look at Ohio St this year. Their OOC schedule consists of Youngstown St, Akron, Washington, and Kent. With the exception of Washington, it's a joke. It's unfortunate that Syracuse sucks now, but when the series was scheduled (not sure when it was actually scheduled) it may not have looked that unattractive. We also have a home/home against Alabama coming up and a series with VA. Had we scheduled Rutgers or USF when the Syracuse series was scheduled in their place (4-5 years ago) people would have really been b**chin.
The real problem is that the $'s and contracts involved mean that we have to schedule these series 4-5+ years in advance, so when we find out that Syracuse is terrible, we are not in a position to schedule anyone good to fill the remaining spots on the OOC schedule.
While I'm certainly not high on the state of the program right now, I've almost gotta give this one a pass. Fran almost has to be a fortune teller to figure out who's going to be good in 4-5 years and then try to schedule them. Look at Alabama -- the second that Nick Saban became the head coach at Alabama, that series took on a lot more importance. I don't envy the person that's gotta look ahead 4-5 years and try to schedule the marquee matchup. There's a lot that can happen in that time.

So...............
What a bunch of whiners. You sound like old women sitting on a porch in Atlanta, complaining about the weather.
Everyone knows that PSU football helps support all PSU sports. And PSU makes lots of $$$ by scheduling these "cupcake " teams at home, and not having to retrun away games. This is the only way that PSU get 7-8 home games each year.
Also, raise your hand if you know what college has produced the most current NFL head coaches. If you said Eastern Illinois, you'd be right (3--Google is your friend).
Lastly, ever hear of a team named Appalachian State?
Didn't think so.

Maybe Coastal Carolina wanted to improve on their strength of schedule and not have so many cupcakes....
I kid, I kid.....
