Lasch Marks, Alamo Bowl Edition: Texas A&M
Quarterback:
We saw what we've seen all year from Morelli. One or two good passes, a bunch of bad ones and a few "WTF" passes, too. Good riddance. Daryll Clark saw his most extensive playing time of the year in a "Hey, Pryor, look what we can do with you" kind of display. Clark never passed the ball, but ran quite well. But, fortunately for PSU, A&M never bothered to adjust their defense when Clark came in the game.
Grade: C
Runningback:
This may well have been Rodney Kinlaw's best game of the year. He ran strong and he ran leaning forward. He also showed off some moves I hadn't seen from him. Royster didn't get too many carries, but made the most of them, scoring once on a long TD run.
Grade: A
Offensive Line:
Again the OL showed why it was the most pleasant surprise of the season. They again opened up holes left and right for Kinlaw and company. Wiz and Lucian had their way with their guys.
Grade: A
Tight End:
As as been the case all year, PSU completely ignored the TE. Quarless had two balls thrown his way. However, he blocked well. Mickey Shuler had a false start penalty on a key 3rd and 2 play.
Grade: B-
Wide Receiver:
With Morelli again in a funk, the WRs had a quiet day, other than Butler's great diving TD catch on a wobbly duck thrown by Morelli.
Grade: B
Defensive Line:
Despite being severely undermanned at the DT spot, Ogbu, Taylor and Koroma played quite well. Despite only one sack from the unit, the DL constantly got pressure on McGee. Maurice Evans was held without a sack again, but forced two fumbles.
Grade: B+
Linebackers:
Sean Lee racked up 14 tackles on his way to defensive MVP. Tyrell Sales had the game's only sack (though, Gbadyu should have been credited with one on the 4th and 1 when McGee fell down on the option. Gbadyu was right there about to pounce).
Defensive Backs:
The secondary still struggled in some reads, especially safeties, but at least put forth a better effort than in recent games, especially when trying to tackle. Still, this unit has the most work to do in the offseason, King or no King.
Grade: B-
Special Teams:
Jeremy Boone took full advantage of kicking in a dome, averaging 51 yards per kick. Kevin Kelly continued to be money inside 40, but awful outside 40. The return units were mediocre.
Grade: C+
Coaching:
The most newsworthy item from the coaching box was getting Daryll Clark snaps in an obvious effort to sway Terrelle Pryor. Clark ran six times (five up the middle) on seven snaps. Otherwise, the staff did enough to get by. Fortunately A&M wasn't all that daunting of an opponent.
Grade: B+
Officiating:
The side judge bumped into someone on the PSU sideline (couldn't tell if it was a player in street clothes or a guest) then did a FIFA-worthy flop to make it look worse than it was. Later, Jeremy Boone got laid out after a punt by an A&M player, but no call. Not sure if that was a "gotcha" call or not. These were C-USA refs. Have they never used replay before?
Stadium Replay Board:
So for live action, they showed the ESPN feed. But seemingly any time there was a break in the action (I just mean between plays), they'd cut away from the ESPN feed to list the game sponsors. That got annoying, as half the replays were never shown.
Texas Aggie Band:
Despite the playlist getting a bit trite, the A&M band kicks the ass of a lot of bands I've seen. They make OSU's dotting of the 'i' look like a 2nd grader's handwriting. Maybe it's just the military aspect of the band, I don't know.

Can Clark pass the ball well enough to be an every-down quarterback in the Big Ten? (Can Devlin?) Can he pass well enough that teams won't be able to key on the run every time he comes into the game? (Thank you, TAMU coaching staff, for your near-complete lack of awareness!)
If Devlin is the starter, will we continue to split the QB wide when DC comes into the game or will we try playing with eleven offensive players?

Most of us have been critical of the O-line staff, especially Dick Anderson, but hats off to the tremendous strides they made as the season went along. Not the same group we saw in the Big Toilet Bowl.

"Kevin Kelly continued to be money inside 40, but awful outside 40."
Next year's team has a chance to be special if we can find a QB and Royster can stay healthy (and/or S.Green turns out to be "all that"). But we're going to need better long-range kicking from Mr. Kelly. (How can one be 18-18 inside 40, but just 2-8 from 40+???)

A horrible non-call, to be sure, but that's not a reviewable play.

My comment about replay was for all the replays they did earlier in the game, when it seemed like they were stumped as to what to do (despite the headset not working), not the missed roughing call. My bad.

So you're saying the stadium replay board was just like what we're used to at Beaver Stadium -- An ad board for sponsors and no time to show replays?

I was at the game as well, and watched the replay on my DVR.
ESPN showed a nice graphic on Kelly: He's 9-of-25 on FGs beyond 40 yards. We'll need better than that kind of production from him next year.
Some things A&M never bothered to notice:
1) When Clark entered the game, it was a QB draw.
2) When Morelli lined up at WR, he was not getting the ball.
3) When Shuler came in at TE, it was going to be a run.
Kudos for PSU getting up "off the mat" after going down 14-0. Never would have expected that from the '07 Nittany Lions.
