Cowher & Curley Slumber Party?

Laschout has learned from multiple sources that Bill Cowher was on campus February24th and 25th.  His time at PSU included an overnight stay at Tim Curley's home.  So inquiring minds want to know, what was the reason for this visit?

Any chance this has to do with Cowher's youngest daughter who is a basketball player? More fun to think it is football related, though.

Tony... that very well could be why. We have heard his daughter has legit interest in PSU. Still, perhaps BC would be willing to take less money and coach at PSU so he could watch his daughter play hoops. After all, he retired from the NFL in order to spend more time with his kids. It's probably a wild longshot, but this would allow him to do both.

Maybe he couldn't afford to stay in a hotel.

Seriously, if this IS about Lindsay Cowher, wouldn't the overnight stay be a potential recruiting violation? (I'm not sure about the specific rule, but I figure that the odds are with me because the NCAA has a ban against almost everything!)

Well.. it's not hard to get you people worked up. No, Bill Cowher will not be coaching at PSU. Look for an announcement in the next week or so that Coach's contract has been renewed, and a statement from SID that Coach will be coaching at PSU for as long as he wants. Now... back to your feeding frenzy...

Isn't it an NCAA violation for the parents of a recruit - whether it be for football, men's bball or women's bball, etc. to get free lodging at a potential school? Even if there was a previous relationship, the president as a representative of the school may not be able to do that. Can you imagine if recruits parents stayed with Joe or Tressel all of the talk that ensue.

As big of a yinzer Still fan as I am, I think having Bill Cowher coach PSU is a big mistake. What it takes to be successful at the pro game (excessive film study leading to a completely new playbook each week) is so different now from what it takes to be a good college coach (ace recruiter and technique development) that I don't think you can take success at one as evidence of probable success as the other.

For every Pete Carroll there are five Charlie Weises, Chan Gaileyes etc.

So ... you are saying that because Cower was a successful NFL coach, that he would NOT be a good NCAA coach. Thats BS. You need to look at the characteristics of good NCAA coaches. Energetic, charismatic, preach fundamentals, motivator. Cower has all of those attributes. I think he would be a great college coach.

Using his success at the pro level to discredit his potential at the college level makes ZERO sense to me.

No, I'm simply saying that success at the pro level doesn't necessarily mean success at the college level. Cowher may well do fine, but I don'r see it as a slam dunk. I'd prefer someone who has already proven success at the college level.

    1. Don't have your incompetant son coach the qb's and call passing plays: Bill Cowher...check.

    2. Have one offensive coach calling plays, not two: Bill Cowher...check.

    3. Have a special teams coach: Bill Cowher...check.

    4. Don't be 82 years old: Bill Cowher...check.

    5. Be able to motivate your players, and have your players respect you and stay out of trouble for you: Bill Cowher...check.

Sounds like the right attributes to me.

I heard he is interviewing for the special teams coaching opening. Afterall, that was his background in the NFL. Of course, he would have to convince Joe to get rid of one of his multiple lame duck offensive coaches to fit Cowher on his staff.

Define Success at the college level?

    been to bowl games?
    won national championships?
    been to bcs bowls?
    over .500?

If you're saying all 4, forget it, they ain't coming to PSU. Carroll was a lousy pro-coach, but has been lights out at USC (mind you, may be illegally but that's neither here nor there). Weis was widely regarded as a tremendous coach in the pro's, but has largely underachieved.

Why do I think Cowher would be successful? Because football at any level requires 3 things: Strong Defense, Solid Running game and Good Special Teams. Mr. Cowher believes in all 3.

He's not coming to PSU to coach, but I have a feeling if he dipped into the college ranks, he'd be very very successful because of his philosophy of defense, running the ball and ST's.

Grass isn't always greener on the other side of the fence. Be careful what you wish for. Look for the program to tank for several years after JoePA retires as the new coach, AD, administrators, and Spanier wrangle for power of the program. As we are seeing the power is leaving the program because there isa concerte being held at the Beav. There are some that dislike the football program because it get's too much attention and want the attention put in other areas of PSU. I know football makes money but the tree hugging professors that infest the school could care less about the money and only care about their own agendas.

Your question regarding Tim "Smiley" Curley:

Smiley was - as you know - the "neighbor boy" who cut Joe's grass.
Smiley played ball at State High, went on to walk-on at PSU (got injured, don't think he ever saw the field)
He then spent a year as a GA for JoePa, then was "recruiting coordinator" for a short time(back when that was a purely administrative, non-staff position)
He then spent time (6-8 years or so?) as a glorified file clerk under AD Jim Tarman. When Jim retired in after the 1993 football season, Joe put Smiley in the spot he holds today.

as a psu grad, a steeler fan, and a native to the great state of pa, nothing would make me hornier than to see bill cowher walk the sidelines at beaver stadium. but let's be realistic...
    a. cowher is not a member of the penn state "family" so he has no shot in hell of becoming the next head coach of ANYTHING at psu, much less football
    b. as one blogger mentioned, we'd never pony up the dough to pay him. tom bradley will accept 1/8 of the salary cowher commands
    c. why would a coach two years removed from winning the super bowl want a job like the one that will be awaiting joe's successor? a mid-range big ten team with 6 players suspended or kicked off the team in the last year

i say this with nothing but optimism about the upcoming season. a spread offense with a running quarterback (sound familiar?), both lines pretty well in tact, and talented, experienced athletes on both sides of the ball.

wish this story had more truth to it. can't wait for next season. hopefully joe's last. it's time to move on and start building the program back up to the point where mediocrity is no longer acceptable. (see Anthony Morelli era and the last 10 years , omit 2005)
