PSU Football - A Complete and Utter Disgrace
Penn State Football. In the past those words have been synonymous with honor, integrity, and doing things the right way on and off the football field. Today when someone says Penn State Football the words bring to mind mediocrity on the field, lawlessness off the field, a stubborn old coach that has lost control of his once proud program and an Administration that doesn't have the guts to do anything about it.
If you hadn't heard before going to bed last night, you surely know by now that yet another Nittany Lion is in the news. No, not for his football prowess or his classroom work, but instead for reportedly pulling a knife on one of his teammates over a missing cell phone cover. This time it's Chris Bell.... again, but honestly does the name even matter anymore? Scan Penn State's roster and it's more difficult to find names that haven't been in the police news as opposed to names that have. PSU doesn't have just a few bad apples, it has a bushel of them.
So where should the blame be placed? Some will say the players and I agree to an extent. These young men should know the difference between right and wrong by this point in their life. They should know by now that they are under a microscope and any incident, however minor it may be, will be magnified because of their status as a Penn State Football Player. The coaches can't follow these kids everywhere, so only they can decide to walk the straight and narrow.
That being said, I think the majority of the blame has to fall upon the feet of Joe Paterno and ultimately the Penn State Administration. Why you ask? The answer is simple, Joe Paterno runs Penn State Football and he is ultimately responsible for everything that happens within the program. Likewise, the Penn State Administration is responsible for its coaches and their respective programs. It's becoming more and more evident that the players simply don't fear or respect Paterno anymore. They can't relate to him and therefore his words and warnings don't carry much weight. Not to mention, most of the punishments to this point haven't been severe. Players have been given second, third and fourth chances. Sure every program has a few off the field incidents here and there, but at Penn State it has become the norm. Apparently the popular phrase "He's not PSU material" used by so many PSU fans to disparage a player that didn't end up at PSU, now means the player hasn't been arrested yet.
Paterno's performance in the last decade as a head coach hasn't been great. While many boast about Penn State's record since 2005, it's mostly been built on wins over mediocre to below average programs. Check out Penn State's record versus the big boys and you won't like what you find. Look at their road record against good teams and it becomes even less appealing. Combine that with the list of players that have been arrested and you have a complete embarrassment for a program. Joe Paterno can't do the job on or off the field anymore and is apparently intent on tearing down the once proud program he built. He's old, he's stubborn and he isn't going away on his own.
This is where the Penn State Administration needs to step in. Much like the child having to take away the keys from the parent that is no longer fit to drive, Graham Spanier and Tim Curley need to take the coaching whistle away from Paterno. Joe has made it clear that he isn't going to retire. He's also made it clear that he will attempt to dictate to Spanier and Curley how his contract situation and the future of Penn State Football will be decided. Amazingly to this point the Administration seems to be content to let him do so. Apparently nobody on the Penn State campus has the intestinal fortitude to look Joe in the face and tell him it isn't his decision to make. One needs to only look at recruiting to see what kind of impact this situation is having on the program. It will only get worse if this situation is left unresolved.
Unfortunately at this point, Joe Paterno is too stubborn to walk away and neither Graham Spanier nor Tim Curley have the guts to make him. Meanwhile, the once proud program we all love, doesn't look very familiar anymore. Perhaps they could trade in the blue and white uniforms for orange jump suits. It would be more fitting.

Hi Jim - you should come over my apartment later. Me, indynittany, rathskeller, and blueband98 are going to be having a circle jerk in honor of the mighty joepa. Jay is going to be stopping by later to discuss the HD spread. It will be a mighty fine time!

It is one thing after another. Very dissappointing.
I would dispute your premise slightly. I think Paterno needs to be accountable for what these kids do, but he is not to blame. People, whether football players or your everyday average student, shouldn't need to fear someone (Paterno in your premise) to make the right choice when it comes to personal behavior. I don't know why these problems are happening with more frequency, but you can't blame Paterno. You can, and should, hold him accountable, however.

I'll agree this is really getting out of hand but aside from the fight incidents (HUB included) who else has been in the news, Corless, Bell, Scott...but after that I am somewhat at a loss out of 65 players and 3 don't konw how to act right I don't believe that it falls on the coaching just yet...look at the rest of the team Williams, Lee, Clark, Devlin, Harriot, Wiz, Norwood...just to name a few these kids understand the oppertunity they have been given and they have not sullied PSU's good name I think that they exemplify it...yes there are a few bad kids and you are right they are given to many chances to come back, I think JoePa needs to instill a 0 tolerance and if you F-up then sorry go play D-2 ball and see how that works for ya

are you serious? how can you leave out those two incidents? also, are you saying that 3 isn't too bad. that's bad enough. what a ridiculous statement.

Kudos 17 on this blog. This program is downright embarrassing both on and off the field. I'm so done until a change is made. I was maybe going to attend 2-3 games this year. No longer. Everybody that wants to absolve the coaches from this incident simply are not seeing the big picture. It's a culmanation of things, the many arrests, the decade of mediocrity, the head coach not recruiting, etc. The only way to remedy this is to get rid of Joe ASAP. The longer the admin waits the bigger the rebuilding job for the new coach. It's only going to get worse from here on out. LJ Sr will probably be gone next year and Ron Vanderlinden will jump at any head coaching opportunity that he has a shot at. In 2009, this team will be an abomination.
Face it PSU fans, we are not much different than the Miami teams that we used to loathe.

I bet you $50 that you will go to atleast two games this year if not more and when PSU has a good start and wins some games you will be back on the band wagon...I bet you are a steelers fan too (but not until Rothlesbuger became Q

wow, what relevance does him being a steeler fan have at all? but since you brought it up, I feel i have the right to counter. 95% of steeler fans are not bandwaggon fans. that's just rediculous to think. pittsburgh is known for its passionate and blue collar fan base. Having lived in the pittsburgh area for the past 20 years, I know that the fan support has never significantly changed. did heinz field of three rivers stadium ever not sell out? no. did you ever hear of a decline in the sales of steeler merchandise? no. Did cbs ever complain about poor television ratings? definitely not. Since the 70's the steelers have built up so much goodwill with its fans that no matter what kind of season the steelers are having, fans still love 'em. during some of the low years, of course fans arn't going to be bragging about the team, but did that stop the fans from watching the games religiously? I think not.
if I wanted to be "curious" I would go ahead and assume that you are an eagles fan that is probably just upset that you have never had any bandwaggons to jump on. (read: zero superbowls and zero 'real' history)
Quit hating on the steelers great history and fanbase.

Actually I am a die hard BILLS fan and I am not ashamed one bit to admit it...I don't doubt that steeler support in the city never dropped off, I would suspect any city with any sports team to have full support for that team...it's funny though b/c I was in SC during the years big ben came into town and it was amazing b/c as soon as he started winning you saw alot more steelers fans and alot more bragging (yes bragging comes with winning) but before big ben if I asked any random person who they supported, they wouldn't really answer and then all of a sudden they are wearing balck and yellow, I have seen this first hand so you can't say it's not true...and I don't care how shitty the BILLS are I will be a fan and I will admit it openly, I wear the jersey win or lose and I am proud about how hard they play...and the same goes for PSU win or lose I will support them and I will not lower myself to belittle them in a time turmoil...oohhh and one more thing I love how all the young steelers fans love talking about the superbowl wins before they were even born, thats so wonderful, hell why don't I talk about how the Bills dominated the AFL before they joined the NFL ohh wait I wasn't born and I didn't watch any of that so I guess it has no basis for my opinion on the team...and yes I believe that WAYNE GRETZKY is and was the greatest hockey player there will ever be
Reply to this
well, even as a pens fan, I can't deny that wayne gretzky is the greatest hockey player ever. He was definitely better than super mario and is currently better than sid the kid. now if crosby, starts winning championship after championship, starts scoring more goals, and keeps up his high point totals, who knows?
Before commenting here, i have had respect for bills fans because of two reasons. 1 - the few bills fans I've met have been legit. 2 - the bills fans are known for great tailgating and since I love tailgating i respect greatness.
I'm not convinced on some of your points though. Even before ben came, the steelers wern't that bad, I mean they made it to superbowl 30, and made it to the playoffs 4 other times before ben came. why i mention that is because I think it goes to help prove that the steeler fan base had reason to be excited all those years. I can't really deny any past experiences you had, so i wont try. I guess I was just surrounded with different people; that is, people who's sunday's revolved around the steeler game and the people who still seemed to always wear a decent amount of steeler clothing no matter what. I would be interested in knowing if you can go out shopping (or where ever) on a random saturday and see as many people wearing their team's logo as you see people do in pittsburgh with the steelers. also, I believe i've heard somewhere that steeler fans have an uncommon obsession with owning jerseys, which i think is true as compared to some other local teams I've seen. another point i'd like to make is the insane fan following the steelers have for road games. that has not just happened since ben came, its been going on for a quite a while (even if its because half the city moved away). fans in other cities wouldn't spend the money to watch the games if they didn't really like the steelers.
finally, i really don't agree with the argument about not being able to be proud of accomplishments that occurred before a person was born. if that's the case, i would really doubt the love we both share for psu football would really be as intense. i don't know how old you are, but it seems as if i can conclude that you wern't around for the beginning of the joe pa era (neither was i). but like i said I think people should be able to take pride in what happened in the past, given they have an understanding of what happened. its basically just appreciating history in general that I think is a great thing. when i was like 8 my parents showed me the nfl films presentation of the steelers first four superbowls. needless to say, I loved them. its somewhat embarrasing to admit, but i even remember tearing up at the end of each video. had i never heard from my relatives about all of the steeler tradition and seen those tapes i know i wouldn't be as a big of a fan as I am today. the steelers history in the 70's provided the foundation in which my fanhood was built.

If the players still respected Joe, do you think they would be getting into as much trouble lately as they have been? Joe can no longer relate to the player and he does not perform his job duties to the best of his ability so in that regard, he should be gone. I have always respected and loved JoePa but he has only himself to blame for me waivering in his support.
And as far as being a Steeler fan, not even close. I've been a Philadelphia sports fan and PSU fan for my entire existence so don't tell me about being on the bandwagon. I have always supported my teams through the good and bad times and mostly bad times. I will continue to follow PSU football as much as before but I will follow it from the comfort of my living room. Will I change my mind, it's entirely possible but at this point, I don't have the desire to invest an entire day to see our team play hard but be held back by our stubborn and ineffective head coach.

i agree the program is a dissapointment, however, i would appreciate the blog not sensationalize when 10 out of 85 have been in trouble - hardly more than half. also, howmany of that 10 have been convicted (proven guilty) of these issues. so far austin scott, even chris bell haven't been found guilty. lets wait for the judicial system to play out before fully criticizing the kids
also - i love how lo decides to post as soon as something bad happens - didnt take long! - agenda

10 out of 85 is hardly more than half? All I can say is WOW!
FWIW, the "Spring Fling" involved more than 20 players.
An agenda? Read the practice report. There were glowing items in there, but perhaps they did not serve YOUR AGENDA.
What good news has come from the program in past four months? Six months? One year?
Here is the scary thing....PSU has not hit bottom yet!

do you really dismissed, acquitted shouldnt be on here - it means that they aren't guilty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! they weren't proven of any wrongdoing - also summary offense is about as major as a speeding ticket
was chisley a member of psu when he commited his crime? does usc get a bad rap for OJ thats ludicrous to include players not on the team

Also notice that RJ Luke was found guilty in a civil trial. And many of the other "dismissed" or "acquitted" show very poor judgement at the LEAST, like the Rashard Casey case.
Reply to this
Dismissed charges doesn't mean they're innocent. Something similar would be like going to traffic court and because the cop didn't show up to court, the speeding ticket gets dismissed. Did they speed? Absolutely, but due to other circumstances, it was dismissed.
Only an acquittal means they are truly innocent.
Oh, and it's a good thing that they didn't list all the players involved in the Oct 6 brawl, that had 20 players involved.

Let's not forget about Spencer Ridenhour. Yes, he transferred, all the way up to UMass. And like Stanley Pringle, he has a little problem with keeping things in his pants.

I think JoePa has got to stop being so loyal to the people in the football program and clean house. It seems apparent that there are individuals that are undermining the power he once had over the program. He can't babysit 65+ kids and another 50 or so staff people within the program. There seems to be a contingent in the program that removes the fear of these kids should have of losing everything, thier scholly, their football carreer, etc. I am very disappointed in the tarnished reputation PSU has recieved in the past few years. Is it me or is their a contingent out thier that is on a witch hunt?

This site just calls it as they see it. Do you really think th ePSU teams of the 80's and early 90's got into this kind of trouble. They RESPECTED JOE and what he said. The players now disregard JOE. He is a legend. He was a Great coach. Now he is hurting this program. We need a guy who players will listen to. Not one they will walk all over. I guess with Joe spending so much time at home he has no ability to gain control back of the team.

I cringe everytime I prepare to hit that Daily Collegian link just wondering what athletes name will be in the headline and who did he masterbate in front of or hold up at gun (knife) point....its sickening...I love knowing how much money I shell out year in and year out to support this team and this is what they give me in return, let alone the verious disgraces on the field the past several seasons....

FSU, OSU, Wisconson and TN are all solid wins against top tier programs. That said, we've been a very good team, not a great team the last 3 years. if Joe is at fault it is in not taking more ownership of the recruiting process. Who recruited Bell, Baker, taylor, ALE, and Timmons? Why not blame him if you're in the mood?
Reply to this
Why is the magic number now 3 years when looking back. Last year it was 2, next year it will be 4. Wake up!
Five years from now, people will still be holding onto the 2005 season as the standard. A standard is not met once in eight years, or once in four. 2005 was the exception, not the rule.
Reply to this
No recruit is offered a scholarship until it is approved by Joe. I did not know ALE was a criminal, he just decided he did not want to put the effort into being a D1 football player.
Reply to this
We now also have a situation where Penn State coaches may be called to testify against Bell, since the coaches were present and restrained Bell. Ugh.
On the other hand, there are 80+ players out there that don't deserve to be thrown under the bus. I prefer to focus my attention on them.

Count me as one of the alumni who are both embarrassed and amazed by the outbreak of incidents involving a number of our football players. As far as Paterno is concerned I believe he should have retired ten years ago and dismissed at the latest five years ago. Nothing personal Joe but from a football fan’s perspective when you took PSU into the Big 10 and took in house retirement you lost my support. From a football perspective 0-9 versus Michigan and 1-5 versus Michigan and Ohio State since the end of the so called bad years says it all.
I will now address what I believe to be the real issue here. Continued embarrassment being brought to PSU by the actions of members of its football team. I would not hold Paterno or any other Coach to blame. I do hold the Coach accountable to the University to make sure the players stay above reproach in their interaction with the Public. Kids should not be pushing their way into apartments, fighting in public or with members of the public, or out carousing until early hours during the football season. The Coach has to set the bar for student athletic conduct much higher than what the law or judicial affairs would tolerate. IMHO some of the legal allegations are overcharged and will not see success. But, that is irrelevant. The damage to the reputation of PSU is accumulating. Personally it won’t affect me one bit as far as attendance at games or giving to the University. I just hope the PSU Board of Directors and administration will take the necessary actions to right the ship.
Reply to this
Let me get this straight. This site lambasted Paterno last year, including a headline post of something along the lines of "Just throw him the d--- ball", for not playing Bell. This was even though it was widely known that Bell wasn't playing much due to his attitude and work habits, and Paterno was not going to give him playing time until he earned it. I believe this was also a week before Bell dropped an easy touchdown pass. You critisized Paterno for his methods in treating Bell then. Now, Paterno is also to be blamed for Bell's recent crazy conduct. Had Paterno been harder on Bell you would have shi* bricks you would have been in such fit, now Paterno wasn't hard enough, or should have known never to have offered a scholorship? I guess a short memory is convenient to excuse yourself from such blatant hypocrisy.

I remember a proclamation of Bell being a sure-fire NFL player, too.

You're correct. The Penn State Staff felt he had the talent to be a first round draft pick.
Reply to this
17 - I would rephrase..."some" on the Staff believed he had the talent to be a 1st rounder. After a couple of months on campus, the opinion of his talent level was not the same. It was probably directly related to his lack of a work ethic. Raw talent only gets you so far. If you are "dogging" it day in day out at practice by running slow and clumsy routes and dropping balls, who's fault is that? Raw talent gets you in the door...that's it.

If Joe is not removed soon, I really am starting to fear that we are going to slip into mediocrity for the next 10, or more, years. For each year that Joe holds on, we are set back 3. I'm just clinging to the hope that the right people know this and are doing what they have to to get rid of Joe.
We have to remove him THIS year, and go hire Schiano. We need someone who will energize the program immediately. If not, we'll have a long road ahead of us before we get back to where we belong.
But, I do have to say, the break I've been on has been nice. It's nice not having to be reminded of how bad the road ahead is and just focus on the fact that next year should be pretty good.

nothin will change...status quo...people can whine, but until PSU gets hit where it hurts (their pockets, they have no nuts), nothing changes...wanna do something, get MASSIVE numbers to just not watch a PSU game or 2 this year...not on big 10 network, but on espn or abc...set somehin up where people don't go to game, don't watch it on tv, and don't listen on radio - this will likely never happen, so change will likely never happen...why complain? it is like a small dog baking like crazy but when it comes time to go, backs away like a beotch

Hard to lead by example when you are sitting at home. Joe was Great. He still is a legend. But if you can not see that he has lost respect of the players you are blind. Old Joe never would have had this many problems. Joe was great for PSU. he did alot but everyday he stays he is tearing down thise accomplishment. Time take away the KEYS and get a new sheriff because this program is in serious need of some quality help.

It's the damn NCAA's fault. If they would let the boosters buy stuff for the players(cell phone cases, hookers, beer, etc) they wouldn't have to steal things from each other and they would be too happy to go out and fight.

"An agenda? Read the practice report. There were glowing items in there, but perhaps they did not serve YOUR AGENDA."
I believe what he meant by agenda was this sites dislike for Paterno and the constant call for him to either step down or for the admins to remove him
no where in the spring training report did it say anything about how Joe was treating the kids (i.e. he had thier respect and attention) again if you watch the youtube video you can tell that he still has fire in his heart and the respect of the players and coaches
now I don't know if the media day practice was just a facade for the cameras (which I don't believe it was) but it showst that Joe can still do it no matter what the nay-sayers have to say
I believe that is what he meant by agenda

How dare you post the truth about Paterno and the fact that he should have retired seven years ago?
Sincerely,

How did I know Laschout would have a "Joe Must Go" post this week? Seriously guys, you're so predictable and boring.

Joe needs to go. Aside from the off the field problems, which in my opinion is a sign of institutional/program control, this team has grossly underachieved.
You want to blame Morelli, fine, then explain 1999, explain 1997, explain 2002, where we had a NC type team. Explain 2005, where the man you're defending screwed up the loss that we had on the field.
Joe Paterno should have retired in 1994 according to my parents, and in my opinion in 2005 after the Orange Bowl. The man has done so much for the university, let him at least enjoy it before he is no longer with us. He's 81 years old, he doesn't recruit, he changes gameplans, and quite frankly he doesn't let go because he's afraid of what happened to Bear.
Joe Paterno is beloved around the country, but that doesn't mean he has the right to stay as long as he wants. He has lost complete and utter control of the program. The kids no longer fear him, nor do they listen to him.

SC .... do you really need to create other handles to bash us? For someone that dislikes the site so much, you spend a ton of time here. Get out of your folks basement and enjoy life a little.

Yeah, you guys have an agenda...these are college age kids, when I was in college we did stupid stuff too, but didn't get thrown into the limelight as easily as they do now...too many new outlets, so little to report! Let's see Joe took a crap see it on the news! Jay mowed his lawn...write about it in your blog!
The kids are the problems, the staff and university is not. They are given what they need to make it, and if they choose to be stupid an screw up their lives, then it's all on them!
Let's see college kids fighting and drinking...damn, that's a crying shame, it never happened when I was in school...nope never we were all angels and never even looked at beer! YEAH RIGHT!
These kids need to learn to respect what is given to them...GIVEN to them!
Bell was an overhyped underachiever and a lot of people are glad he's gone! He ws given his shot, he screwed it up and he's out of it! Sorry kid, you lose!
I see Terrelle Pryor doing the same thing...Talent wasted on being a thug!

Yeah, well it was news when grandpa almost took a dump on the sideline at OSU and then ran on the corner of the field to head to the locker toom. I bet he almost deficates himself at least 3 times this upcoming year.

Don't want to be a wise guy Derek, but an acquittal does NOT mean you are TRULY innocent.
If you didn't do it then you are TRULY innocent!

Hey tards, while bashing the program you could at least say something about Sean Lee and his torn ligament.
Reply to this
Joe Paterno caused him to tear his ligament..you didn't know that? Without sarcasm, this is a huge blow.

as a website you claim you don't like to repost other known information which is what you did with this topic. however, when a wortwhile topic comes aboard such as a great person and player Sean Lee tearing his ACL, laschout does not post or offer up their opinion of the situation - is this Joe's fault?
Reply to this
maybe they will post a story saying joe stuck his leg out to intentionally hurt sean lee

Just keep telling yourself everything will be fine. After a defensive assistant or two leave after this season, will that finally get your attention? Or will that be Laschout's fault too? At best, this program is stuck in neutral. Lose AC's who actually recruit then develop those kids, there is only one way to go.
SC - If there is nothing worthwhile here, why do you visit so much?
Lee is a hard worker, a great guy, and he will be missed. Hope that satisfies those who questioned.
